Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and those of the All Progressives Congress, APC Saturday morning engaged in free-for-all at the gate of the Oba of Benin palace in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
The incident started when a group that said it was on a solidarity march for Captain Hosa Okunbor to the palace of the Oba of Benin had on arrival met the group loyal to the PDP that was already on ground to welcome the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki and his visitors to the palace.

The Governor and the PDP chieftains were visiting the Benin Monarch to inform him of the flag-off of their governorship campaign holding at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
‌Both groups started chanting anti-party songs and confronting each other. ‌It took the intervention of men of the Nigeria Police Force to bring the tense situation under control. As at the time of this report, ‌supporters of the both parties were still at the Oba of Benin palace gate chanting anti-party songs.

‌Captain Okunbor and the State Governor have been in the news of late over alleged support of another candidate in the upcoming Edo State Governorship election slated for September 19, 2020.
